The findings, at a glance

What lines up with AI visibility.

How often AI names a business, compared across 41 businesses.

Each tile compares the AI mention rate (the share of AI answers that name a business) for the top and bottom quarter of businesses on that signal, or for sites with and without a feature. See every signal ↓

01 — Who gets recommended

Same search.
Different businesses.

A customer looking for a local business can get different names depending on where they ask. We compare the businesses in each answer using the same local search prompts.

In this sample, AI recommendations and Google Maps results have an average overlap of 9.4%. A business’s position in Maps alone does not tell the whole story of its AI visibility.

How to read this

0% means no names in common. 100% means identical sets of businesses. The measure accounts for different list lengths and is averaged across eligible comparisons.

02 — The signals, one by one

What do more visible
businesses have in common?

We line up how often AI names each business with its Google presence, reviews, website content, and technical setup, from page speed to llms.txt.

Google search (SEO) shows the biggest gap: businesses in the top quarter for organic search visibility are named by AI 9.5× as often as the bottom quarter.

A pattern, not a prescription

Businesses that lead on one signal often lead on others, so no single comparison shows what would change a business’s AI visibility on its own. Local market and industry differences also shape the results.

What did we measure?

41 businesses across 1 published city-and-industry market. We issue local-service prompts to ChatGPT and Gemini, record business recommendations, and compare them with Google Maps and organic search results. Collection sources: Google Maps; Google organic search; Gemini API with Google Search grounding; OpenAI API with web search.

How are businesses selected?

Businesses are selected from stronger, middle, and weaker Google Maps performers. Additional businesses discovered in AI answers are verified before publication. This is a stratified, non-probability sample, not a random survey of all businesses.

What can’t these results tell us?

AI answers change with the prompt, time, location, model, and interface. API observations do not reproduce the consumer apps. Associations do not establish cause and effect, and visibility does not measure business quality. Aggregates reflect only the published markets, and available measurements can differ by analysis.
